National Symposium On Plant Biology and Biodiversity
in
Changing Environment

          December 29-31, 2003
Department of Botany, Faculty of Science

Environment plays a decisive role in determining plant productivity. Since the industrial revolution, environment has been rapidly changed by anthropogenic activities like industrialization, fossil fuel burning, deforestation, and extensive use of agricultural chemicals, raising the level of atmospheric CO2 and other green house gases with a consequent rise in global temperature and a redistribution of rainfall. The level of UV-B radiation is also rising at an alarming rate. Non-availability of water is going to be a crucial limitation in the coming 50 years. All these factors are to intensify further with passage of time and have a bearing on plant biology and biodiversity. This situation has caused a serious concern all over the world and merits an immediate attention.

This symposium forms a significant step in this direction and will provide a meaningful forum for the experts from all parts of the country for dissemination of knowledge and exchange of information on the impact of environmental factors on plant performance, its assessment and interpretation, and for formulating plans for action. You are cordially invited to participate.

VENUE

Jamia Hamdard, a Deemed University established in 1989 and Accredited in ‘A’ Category by the NAAC, is located in the Tughlaqabad area of South Delhi. The picturesque university campus, spread over an area of about 96 acres of land, touches the Badarpur-Mehrauli Road on one side and Guru Ramdas Road on the other. The campus, with Batra Hospital Complex on M.B. Road as a landmark next to it, is about 20 km from New Delhi Railway Station and 25 km from Delhi Station. Delhi is quite cold in December, with the average temperature normally varying from 10-20°C. Participants need to bring woolen clothing.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The inaugural address on the first day will be followed by two technical sessions. The next two days will have sessions for oral and poster presentations.

The broad themes of the sessions are:

• Biodiversity: Extent, significance and threats

• Global climatic change and plant production

• Plant structure, growth and development in relation to environment

• Biotic and abiotic stresses, impact on plants, adaptation and management

• Tolerance/Resistance mechanisms in plants: Physiological and molecular bases

• Phytoremediation

SUBMISSION OF PAPER

The abstract, in about 250 words, as well as the manuscript of the full paper developed on the pattern of Phytomorphology should be sent in duplicate to Prof. M. Iqbal, Department of Botany, Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard University), Hamdard Nagar, New Delhi-110062 to reach him before deadlines mentioned below. The abstracts, accepted after scrutiny, will be published and distributed to the participants. Full presentations of the Symposium, selected after peer review, will be published in the form of a book of international standard.
