Department of Chemistry

Chemistry department offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. Programme in Chemistry with the option of specialization in (a) Organic Chemistry (b) Industrial Applications. The objective of the programmes is to produce professionally trained chemists for pharmaceutical, polymer, petroleum and allied industries. This department also supports PG Diploma in Chemoinformatics under open and distance learning mode to educate the students about various aspects of drug design and development and the use of information technology to speed up the process of drug design. Thrust areas of research include studies on the chemistry of natural products (isolation and characterization of active principles in pure form from natural sources and their subsequent pharmacological screening), organic synthesis (synthesis of flavonoids, heterocycles, sulfonyl urea and sulfonyl thiourea derivatives and evaluation of their potential as anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and anti cancer agents), and the synthesis of nanomaterials and drug delivery.

During last five years, the faculty of the department has undertaken 7 research projects, supported by CSIR, UGC, DBT, DST, and INMAS. The department has organized following three seminars and symposium: (i) Indo-US Symposium on Cancer nanotechnology (Feb 4-6, 2008, INSA), (ii) One day Seminar on ‘Synthesis and Characterization of nanomaterials with Indian Society of Analytical Scientists (ISAS), Delhi Chapter (17 November, 2007, JH), and (iii) Seminar on ‘Exposure of nanotechnology to school level students’ (28-29 July 2007, JH).

Department has awarded 23 PhDs and currently 20 PhDs are registered. Recently six students have qualified NET, and 03 have qualified GATE. The pass out students of the department have either been offered teaching and postdoctoral positions in various academic institutions or research laboratories including Wageningen University (Netherlands), Integral University (Lucknow), degree colleges of Anantnag, Pulwama, Badgam (Kashmir), Ranbaxy Research Laboratories (Gurgaon), Dr. Reddy’s Lab ( Hyderabad), Jubilant Organosys Ltd. (Noida), Dabur Research Lab (Sahibabad), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (New Mumbai), Sriram Institute for Industrial Research (Delhi), Wockhardt Ltd. (Aurangabad), and Nicholas Piramal India Ltd.
